Third System Failure in Two Weeks at Newark Liberty Airport

Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in the United States experienced its third system failure in two weeks, affecting hundreds of flights over the weekend. The FAA reported that the latest outage on Sunday morning was due to a brief failure in the backup air traffic control system, resulting in a 45-minute ground stop. By Sunday night, more than 250 flights had been delayed, with at least 80 cancellations.
In addition to system failures, the airport is also facing air traffic controller shortages. While the FAA assured that flights remain safe, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced plans to reduce Newark’s capacity and hold discussions with airlines. He also noted that a direct communication line will be established from Newark to the Philadelphia TRACON, as the current line is inefficient.
